Fond memories of the late great Peadar

I WENT to the funeral of Peadar O’Brien last weekend in Dublin.

For many years, the popular Dublin journalist worked for the Irish Press and latterly The Sun. He was a dedicated, entertaining and decent man with a great sense of humour. Everyone has a story to tell about him.

In Kerry, it’s the following: in the 80s there was a stand-off between the Kerry County Board and their great senior team over a holiday or some such matter.

This issue was to come before the county board meeting for public airing and Peadar was dispatched to cover the debate. But prior to the meeting and unbeknownst to the media, then chairman, the late, great, Frank King, had held discussions with player representative and all was sorted. The county board meeting started and went on and on but not a word was uttered about this major dispute. As it approached Peadar’s deadline, and desperately in need of a story, he held up a piece of paper for the top table to see – written on it on bold print was “say something please”. But it was all to no avail. After that there weren’t many journalists sent from Dublin for ‘breaking news’ at county board meetings in Kerry.
