Lessons learned by star past-pupils in final

ON Sunday I had the privilege of attending an intriguing club decider in Killarney – the Kerry IFC final.

The clash of Currow and Spa was local and parochial in every sense. Both, border my club Kilcummin, and both have glorious pasts, punching above their weights throughout the years and producing players like Donie O’Sullivan, Paudie O’Mahony, Moss Keane, Seamus Scanlon and a load of stars whose name was Mick – Doyle, Galwey, Fleming, Aherne, McAuliffe, Gleeson and many more.

Both clubs are very progressive with continuous development projects making them the envy of many. In recent times though, championship success has eluded them both.

On Sunday, Spa hit the ground running and looked likely winners from a long way out. They were sharper, though Currow were more competitive than the 1-12 to 0-7 scoreline suggests.

One of the most satisfying aspect of seeing clubs winning major titles after many years in the doldrums, is the joy on the faces of players and supporters at the final whistle. These are moments that will be treasured forever by the individuals and their families. There were 10 past-pupils of mine on the Spa team and some of them have laboured long and hard in their club’s cause.

Now, of course, thanks to the introduction of the provincial and All-Ireland junior and intermediate championships, new adventures await. It will be nice to see all those past-pupils travelling to places I might have mentioned in their geography lessons, some years ago!
