Edwards Lifesciences marks five years in Mid-West and back-to-back global Plant of the Year awards

A blend of disciplined quality management, operational excellence, and deep community roots earned Edwards’ Limerick and Shannon plants top recognition within the company’s global manufacturing network.
In 2018, we established our first Irish footprint in Shannon, expanding in 2021 into our purpose-built facility in Castletroy, Limerick. Today, our Irish operation employs more than 600 people, manufacturing advanced heart valve therapies and related components for patients with heart valve disease.
Our site has now been awarded the Edwards Lifesciences global Plant of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Selected from across our international manufacturing network, our plants in Limerick and Shannon received the distinction for overall performance across operations, quality, safety, employee engagement and continuous improvement.
This back-to-back recognition reflects the strength of our Mid-West team and its impact within our global network.
Operating in a highly regulated sector, our Castletroy and Shannon facilities manufacture life-saving heart valve therapies for patients worldwide. In this environment, precision, compliance and quality discipline are non-negotiable.
Our consecutive Plant of the Year wins reflect the consistent execution of our manufacturing processes. Operating within strict regulatory frameworks, our team maintains robust quality systems, structured documentation and clear metrics across all critical control points on the production floor.
When external supply chain challenges impact the industry, this disciplined approach enables our team to make sound, quality-focused decisions. By relying on proven methodologies and clear operational visibility, we maintain stable execution, navigate manufacturing complexities and ensure a reliable supply of structural heart innovations to the patients who need them most.
While processes provide the framework, ultimately it is our people who are behind the Plant of the Year distinction. The award heavily weighs workforce development, site culture, and employee safety, areas where our Irish team truly excels.
Over the past year, our team delivered more than 38,000 training hours, supported by dedicated career development toolkits, graduate tracks and mentorship programmes designed to foster continuous learning and professional growth.
Furthermore, our operational success is built on an active culture of employee feedback. Core teams submitted 500 ideas for process improvement leading to over 200 implemented changes that improved safety, quality and efficiency within manufacturing. Coupled with a strong environment, health, and safety (EHS) scorecard, we have created a high-performing manufacturing model that prioritises employee well-being.
Nurturing regional talent and innovation To maintain these high standards, Edwards actively invests in the Mid-West’s talent pipeline which includes a partnership established last year with the University of Limerick (UL) designed for collaboration in key areas including innovation, joint projects, research initiatives and educational programmes.
This year, we also sponsored the annual UL ‘Dragon’s Den’ Medical Device Innovation Showcase which saw three teams of Biomedical Engineering students from the University’s Masters programme pitching medical device concepts to a distinguished panel of industry and academic leaders. This year’s winner was NaviCor Medical whose winning project, EchoTrack, featured an innovative ultrasound-visible catheter tip. This advancement allows for real-time tracking during procedures, significantly enhancing accuracy and safety while minimising the need for fluoroscopy and reducing radiation exposure in cardiac and vascular interventions.
By supporting these students, we help cultivate the next generation of engineers and leaders in medical technology.
Beyond manufacturing excellence, our team is deeply committed to local community engagement. Through our collaboration with Down Syndrome Limerick and their employment programme, we welcomed Jessica, who lives with Down syndrome,to our Castletroy team earlier this year. Jessica works with us every Thursday delivering letters and packages across all departments, supported by her onsite mentor Nicole. Her infectious energy and dedication have enriched our workplace dynamic, embodying our commitment to community integration and inclusive employment.
Our employees also champion local health and wellness causes, supporting fundraisers for Irish Heart Month and World Epilepsy Day. Our sponsorship of the winners’ medals for the annual Milford Care Centre 10km Run & Walk is an important date for our teams. This is a vital fundraiser for specialist palliative and older adult care in the Mid-West, where many of our staff participate each year.
Celebrating five years and more in the Mid-West with back-to-back global Plant of the Year titles is an incredible tribute to our 600-plus employees in Limerick and Shannon.
