This four-bed lodge may be relatively new but it’s got connections to the history-steeped grounds of a much older house.

Redington Lodge at Ballymore in Cobh was built in 1999 on land attached to Redington House which was once a school attended by none other than ‘The Liberator’, Daniel O’Connell.

Though born in Kerry in 1775 O’Connell came to Cork to be educated at what was the first Catholic boarding school in Ireland, then known as Redington Academy. He studied here with his brother before continuing his learnings in France.

The Beazley family — parents Ken and Audrey — and four daughters, bought Redington Lodge in 1960, primarily for the farmlands surrounding it. Later, dad Ken was keen to actually retire when he reached retirement age so he built Redington Lodge on a somewhat more elevated spot than the original house, overlooking the sea. The farm was then leased out.

One daughter notes that there was great thought put into the design and scale of the Lodge: “Dad was 6’6” so he wanted a house he felt comfortable in so that meant spacious hallways, high ceilings and lots of room and light.”

The Lodge is a four-bed detached bungalow on an acre — with living areas at sunniest south-facing sides of the home. The kitchen, sunroom, patio and gardens all have panoramic views across Cork Harbour. This meant that the sun room and kitchen were the favourite spots in the house — along with a long bench against the outside wall for when the weather is good.

“My father, who was on the board of directors of Cobh Pirates Rugby, knew all the boats and would be able to spot when different friends and people he knew were going in and out fishing.”

There are mature gardens here with a variety of apple trees in the orchard section at the more sheltered side of the house. There’s a potting shed and greenhouse too where peaches, grapevines, tomatoes, and strawberries have thrived.

“We never quite made wine from the grapes but got a lovely grape jam alright. Our mother loved the garden, they both did really.”

There’s a detached double garage / work shed near the house which also has a large attic accessed via a Stira... which means conversion potential.

It’s about a 10-minute spin to Cobh town and Ballymore village, with its primary school, church and local pub, the recently renovated High Chapperal, is just two minutes away.

And skipping the car altogether, Ballybrassil Beach is a 10-minute walk away.

The tranquility here is hailed by Johanna Murphy of Johanna Murphy & Sons: “You’re surrounded by nature, it’s such a peaceful setting but you’re still only minutes from Cobh town. And those uninterrupted harbour views are just spectacular.”

VERDICT: Historic roots and harbour views — this four-bed lodge has potential to be a fabulous family home again.
