Budget or Blowout? We give two heat-pump dryers a whirl
The Bosch, left, and Miele heat-pump dryers.
While not the latest and the greatest, there are an astonishing 14 settings with this well-designed mid-range dryer, including Autodry (sensor drying), and an especially useful Sensitive Drying which utilises the unique drum structure to protect your vulnerable fabrics from damage.
Customers' reviews reference the sleek LED display and the 40-minute SuperQuick cycle, which can be used to dash through small loads of lighter cottons if you’re under pressure. Don’t expect the same energy-efficiency when you utilise any rapid run.
The condenser efficiency is right up with the best at 83%, so this is an excellent entry point for a Bosch machine if you like a European build.

The things you won’t get are reverse tumble action, an interior light, or auto-clean filters, or goodies like a sweater/shoe-basket, but overall, this is an excellent choice in a premium brand for a relatively small spend.
The next level up in Bosch heat-pump dryers starts in the area of €800 for Series 4 and Series 6 models with slightly more advanced features; 119kW/hour per annum based on 100 washes (old EU label rating).
This Bosch model, WTH85224GB, is priced at €679.99, Soundstore.ie.
This 10-setting sensor-led machine is rated very highly in the new heat-pump dryer condensation efficiency class, with optimal leak-proof engineering as you would expect from a top maker like Miele.
With a brushless motor and superb engineering, it also has a patented system to stop any fluff from the filters from blocking the heat exchanger.
Sensors don’t just measure moisture but the minerals in the moisture that can influence the machine’s run, and there’s even a FragranceDOS option to scent the load. HygieneDry reliably removes 99.99% of bacteria and 99.9% of viruses from your laundry.

If you like technical smarts, you’ll love the Wash2Dry networking function, which sends data to the tumble dryer at the end of the wash cycle, allowing it to automatically select the correct cycle.
The miele@home app offers notifications when your laundry is ready, tracks energy consumption, and can be used create personalised settings.
Tested for up to 10,000 hours, this super-quiet Miele could offer up to 20 years of service, and can be heavily insulated, so it can sit out in an open-plan room with minimal disturbance; 185kW/hour per annum based on 100 washes (old EU label rating).
This Miele model, TEH785WP, is priced at €1,599, Harveynorman.ie.
