Antique and fine arts: Portraits and engravings in collection from Passage house
Family portraits, miniatures, engravings and furniture from the Hingston family, who lived at Horsehead House at Passage, Co Cork, until the 1960s, will feature at the sale by Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill at 11am on November 26.
There is, for example, a fine Cork Regency mahogany dining table and a set of 14 Georgian Cork six bar chairs. Each is estimated at €4,000-€6,000.
A Georgian Cork brass inlaid secretaire bookcase is estimated at €1,000-€1,500, a Georgian side table with Greek key decoration, (always known as the lamp table when it stood in the hallway at Horsehead), is estimated at just €400-€600.
Keen interest is expected in a set of Nathanial Grogan engravings with five Cork views: Monkstown Castle; Blarney Castle; St Patrick’s Bridge; View at Tivoli and a View of Cork Harbour. The estimate is €1,500-€2,000.
Four family portraits from Horsehead all have the R&W Clarke label on the reverse and family miniatures are estimated at €60-€120 each.
An engraving by Henry Morgan of Horsehead looking to Carrigaloe, is estimated at €100-€200.
Other lots include a Japanese, lacquered collector’s cabinet on stand, in need of restoration (€300-€500), a Georgian Cork 11-bar carver (€400-€600); a Cork dumb waiter (€500-€700); a walnut chest by Warring and Gillows (€400-€600); a partners’ desk (€500-€800) and bedroom furniture.
A large Irish mahogany dining table, more than 15ft long, is estimated at €6,000-€10,000, as well as a set of 16 antique dining chairs by Strahan of Dublin.
No less than 60 lots of books, including the North Munster Antiquarian Journals, the Council Book of Kinsale by Richard Caulfield and Danger Zone (the story of the Queenstown Command).
There are two large lots of quantities of comics (The Magnet and The Gem), a run of The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, several lots of bundles of old Cork newspapers and old maps of various cities of the world.
There is silver from the estate of Pat Cremin and some garden effects.
Viewing in Carrigtwohill is from 10am to 8pm next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
A large pastel by Seán Scully highlights the sale of outstanding Irish art at de Vere’s at the RHA Gallery in Dublin next Tuesday at 6 pm.
This, according to the auctioneers, is one of the finest quality sales they have held in many years.
It includes a small collection owned by John de Vere White and his business partner Barry Smyth, which was put together 15 years ago.
The pastel by Scully from the collection ‘1.6.92’ was acquired from the Trinity Taylor Gallery in London and is estimated at €150,000 to €250,000.
The collection, which includes signature pieces by Barrie Cooke, Patrick Collins, Hughie O’Donoghue, Tony O’Malley and John Shinnors, was at the Four Seasons Hotel (now the Intercontinental), in Ballsbridge for the past 12 years.
All tastes are catered for in an auction which features collections of paintings by Patrick Scott and by Robert Ballagh.
The auctioneers go so far as to hope that this sale might herald the resurgence of the market for Irish art.
There is work by Camille Souter, Louis le Brocquy, Melanie le Brocquy, Leo Whelan, George Russell, Donald Teskey, James H Craig, William Crozier, Basil Blackshaw, Gerard Dillon, Mary Swanzy, Nevill Johnson and William Conor.
Viewing at the RHA is from 11am to 5pm today and Monday, from noon to 5pm tomorrow, and from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday.
Woodwards special auction of Irish and English silver kicks off at noon today.
Notable lots on offer include an Irish silver serving tray presented to Emmet Dalton by his IRA colleagues in 1922, a c1825 Cork freedom box, a 1966 commemorative strawberry dish by William Egan and a selection of Cork and Dublin silver. Viewing at Cook St, in Cork city centre, is from 10am today.
In Limerick the sale by Dolan’s at Castletroy Park Hotel at 2 pm tomorrow is now on view. There are 300 lots of art with some antique furniture and collectibles.

There will be an antiques, art and vintage fair with more than 30 stands at Cahir House Hotel from 11 am to 6 pm tomorrow. It is organised by Hibernian Antique Fairs.
Art by Roderic O’Conor, Jack B Yeats, Paul Henry, William Leech and Sir John Lavery will feature at Bonham’s sale of Modern British and Irish art in London next Wednesday at 3 pm.
There will be an evening sale of Modern British and Irish art at Christie’s on the same day. Christie’s will offer part II of the Leslie Waddington Collection in London next Tuesday.
Memorabilia from Muhammad Ali and Pele will feature at a live and online auction at Julien’s of Los Angeles on December3. The Howard Bingham Ali collection features material held by Ali’s best friend, biographer and one of the most noted sports’ photographers of the last 50 years.
Part of the Pele collection will include trophies and medals awarded to Pele in 1958 and a Santos FC jersey worn in a match against Chelsea in 1971.
