This year the Lough Flower and Garden Club celebrates its 40th anniversary and next Tuesday at 8pm in the SMA Centre, Wilton, the founding and current members will demonstrate exhibits from today and from 40 years ago.

There will also be decorative and horticultural competitions on the night. Non-club members are very welcome, admission €5 at the door. On Tuesday April 28, the club will celebrate its Ruby Anniversary dinner in Rochestown Park Hotel at 7pm, followed by a demonstration with Christopher White AOIFA. Cork Flower Club are hosting John Hosford for a talk in Canon Packham Hall, Douglas, on next Tuesday, March 24, at 8pm

Charleville Flower and Garden Club will hold its March meeting at St Vincent’s Hall on Monday, March 23 at 8pm. Garden talk on roses by Alan Whetham from Kilfinane Roses. Non-members very welcome.

Ardfield Rathbarry Gardening Club will hold a gala Easter floral demonstration by Ruby Harte on Thursday, March 26, in Rathbarry Parish Hall at 8pm. All are welcome.

Cork Alpine /Hardy Plants Society presents Joseph Atkin, head gardener at Abberglassney, Wales, to discuss “Yunnan: The Precious Province.” Members’ plant Sale. Lavanagh Centre 8pm. All welcome.

Dungarvan Flower & Garden Club presents Jimi Blake of Hunting Brook Gardens, Blessington, Co Wicklow, on Wednesday, April 1, at 8pm in the Park Hotel, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford. Plants will be raffled. Adm €10. Non-members welcome.

The Owenabue Garden and Flower Club, Carrigaline, will hold its Spring Show on Monday, March 23, at 8.30pm in St Mary’s C of I school hall. Demonstrator will be Margaret Ahern, AOIFA. The topic will be “Celebrate Spring”. Visitors welcome. Enquiries to 0863222615

Billy Alexander of Kell’s Bay Gardens will give a talk on April 1 at 7.45pm to the Waterford Garden Plant Society on the topic: “Growing hardy exotics in Ireland.” Reception from 7pm.

An illustrated lecture on “The Design of Cork’s Street Furniture” by Tom Spalding will be held at the Clarion Hotel, Cork, by the Cork Decorative and Fine Arts Society. All are welcome. See www.corkdfas.ie for information.

Griffins of Dripsey hold a talk on “Colourful rockeries even for small gardens” on Saturday, March 28, at 2pm.

A special screening of River Runner will take place tomorrow at 8pm in Bantry Cinema for UN World Water Day. This event will have input from the film’s director, Declan O’Mahony, and contributors Alan Nolan and Kevin Corcoran.

Mark Boyden, Coomhola Salmon Trust and chairperson, Sustainable Water Network, will also participate. The film is the story of the River Lee from source to sea. It is an in-depth portrait of the Lee system which highlights the dilemma of the wild Atlantic salmon, the demise of the Pearl Water mussel and the clear felling of an ancient and rare inland forest delta.
