Seagulls abound at Turkeyland’s cliffs

The setting’s the star at this Lislevane, West Cork headland home on acres, says Tommy Barker.

COVES and caves abound in the hinterland of this circa 25-year old coastal home at Lislevane, near Timoleague, Courtmacsherry, and Clonakilty in West Cork.

In fact, its more precise setting in the townland is at a point known as Turkeyland, Lehina... so might it be stuffed by new occupants come Christmas?

Think beautiful Dunworley beach as a sort of locational marker (it’s a mile or two away) for this detached, c 1,600 sq ft ‘upside down’ Lislevane home with its unobstructed, long, and varied sea and land panoramas.

One of about a half-dozen one-offs in a cluster at Turkeyland (the address appears on the 1880s OSI map,) it’s on a ‘notional’ 4.7 acres of ground.

About three acres of it is pasture, and the rest gets rocky, steep, and effectively plunges over a cliff: you’d need to be able to abseil to access the water, most likely, and getting back up is another kettle of fish entirely.

The four-bed, all-en-suite property carries a €595,000 AMV via agents Ray O’Neill and Con O’Neill of Sherry Fitzgerald, and if that itself seems on the steep side, well, it obviously factors in the setting, the vista, the decent amount of land, and an above-average specification.

Plus a bit of hope value?

Sort of H-shaped, it has four ground-floor bedrooms, all with en-suites plus a guest WC.

Overhead is a combined kitchen plus living/dining room, about 14’ wide and up to 40’ in length overall, with a part step-down/split level to define the dining area, while there’s access to a raised balcony/stand off the living end.

However, while the house has a lot of bathrooms, there’s none at the upper, main living level.

External design is quite traditional and in fact looks like an old-style two-up, two-down, with alterations and add-ons, rather than being just a few decades of age.

The property includes a detached garage, and “offers an opportunity to purchase a seafront permanent or holiday home located within an hour’s drive of Cork city and airport,” say Sherry FitzGerald O’Neill, noting a recent local sale of a do-er up cottage for c€270,000.

VERDICT: More Seagull-land than Turkeyland.
