Come hither to style, yet fresh in substance
This 15-year-old house was built to emulate grand homes of the Victorian era and is suitably elegant and proportioned, writes Tommy Barker.
Conceived, built and finished and furnished along elegant, Victorian period home lines is this detached 2,000 sq ft four-bed home, west of Cork city, called Hitherto.
Now about 15 years old, it is on a half acre rural site between Ballinhassig and Innishannon at a spot called Clogheenduane, about 15-20 minutes out of Cork city.
It is pristine, dressed appropriately for the style to which it aspires, with high ceilings and period property proportions, and it is guided at a more modern €595,000 by its selling agent David Busteed of Sherry FitzGerald Brennan Busteed, in nearby Bandon.
The house name appears to come from a large sampler over a living room fireplace, proclaiming ‘Hitherto Hath the Lord Helped Us,’ and Mr Busteed describes Hitherto’s setting as both scenic and peaceful, with mature gardens and its quality and presentation as first rate.
Draped and fringed with autumnal red Virginia creeper, and with a central fan-lit front door with glazed side panels, it’s a dash-faced home of character and quality.
The main flooring is French oak, the kitchen has a ceramic Belfast sink plus a red Rayburn range cooker, some internal doors are in old, stripped pine, much of the furniture is antique or antique-inspired, and the main family bathroom has wainscoting on the walls, and a cast iron roll top bath.

There are three reception rooms, plus good utility off the country-style kitchen; two of its four bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, and a second staircase leads to a top/attic level with two rooms for storage and other uses, with a mix of windows and Veluxes.
Externally Hitherto’s half an acre is landscaped with secure access gate, with a paved drive up to a lofted detached garage and there’s a small orchard, to the side, as a country flavour.
