Go stone mad for this charming Coolmore cottage
AS if the eight gate lodges at Coolmore, near Carrigaline in Cork weren’t cute enough and sufficiently picturesque, the lodge at No 5 goes one step further – it has a rear, lofted stone extension with a twist.
Coolmore is itself one of the great estates of south Cork, and the main period residence, the 1780s-built home of the Newenhams, had a starring role in the Hugh Leonard-adapted/Molly Keane novel-based movie Good Behaviour.
There’s a “Cottage Gothic” cluster of lodges either side of the old main entrance to Coolmore in an open court setting, and No 5 – which is end of terrace – stands guard here on one side.
Built around 1815 to a design by English architect Thomas Cundy, No 5 in the lodges is now a two/three-bed home of huge character and smaller proportions.
It is a new market listing with Dennis Guerin of Frank V Murphy & Co auctioneers, who seeks offers around €265,000 and who says there’s now about 900 sq ft of space here to play with, plus private back gardens, with off-street parking.
The stone and brick feature lofted extension adds on a study and living space, and there’s also a good-sized sitting room, kitchen/breakfast room with oak units and a fireplace, a 18’ by 15’ sitting room, with bay window and stone fireplace, ground floor shower room, overhead main bathroom, plus two bedrooms.
