Bargains on the double in Cork

THERE is good value – even bargains to be had in the property market at the moment, but with strings attached.

Two properties, with enticing price guides, are on the market in two locations in Cork city and county and offer a varied choice.

The first is a detached bungalow at Tower, a short drive to the city and which had been sale at €290,000 some time ago.

Now, with a second sale fallen through, it’s back up for sale at offers of €220,000, and even at site vale levels that’s not bad.

The property has had subsidence issues, but these have been remedied, says auctioneer, Humphrey Hogan. There is work left to do and the house has been stripped out internally, but will need modernisation and a new kitchen.

It has, however a great, raised back garden, which gets sun all day, and there are four bedrooms and two reception rooms, with kitchen extension and a large shed to the rear.

Likewise with the second property, an early Victorian city house on Buxton Hill, right in the heart of Sunday’s Well.

Nearly at the top of this narrow road, it’s effectively half of a house that formed part of the Good Shepherd Convent demesne. This high limestone boundary runs along one side of the property and creates a private, sun-trap garden at the rear. The house will need a serious upgrade, but could be a very attractive city cottage and it provided two decent living rooms, with high ceilings and good fireplaces and an old, deep kitchen which looks on to a driveway.

The main doorway is via a right of way through an adjoining property, but it’s not necessary to use this access point.

At the guide of €295,000, Billy Casey of Casey and Kingston says the property will appeal to those who want a period property with privacy, within walking distance of the city – and at an affordable level for the area.
