Beacon views beckon at Galley

HOW’S this for auctioneering hyperbole?

Beacon views beckon at Galley

“One of the most spectacular coastal settings in the world.” That’s the background claim pinned to this west Cork farmhouse, with its bird’s eye view of Galley Head and its powerful lighthouse beam.

The Galley’s setting is every bit as lovely as the famed Old Head of Kinsale, only wilder, so perhaps auctioneer Martin Kelleher is, in fact, underselling this setting. The visitors’ book at the Irish Landmark Trusts’s two former lighthouse keepers’ houses has equally high eulogies of praise and prose for the Galley’s locale.

Well-set to admire all of this rugged beauty is this fresh market offering, an early 1900s two-storey farmhouse on the road to the Galley, on a tight site by an even tighter bend in the road, almost deliberately narrowed by immaculate stone walls to slow cars to a crawl, all the better to savour the plunging views.

Clonakilty estate agent Martin Kelleher seeks offers around €255,000 for the four-bed house, with very close neighbours and hardly much additional site other than the house’s footprint.

It has a living room, quaintly- titled parlour, the best views are from the side sun room, positioned for sunsets and the sweep of the light beam as it combs the night skies. Yep, a world-class setting alright.
