Spacious home ticks all the boxes
Unfortunately, though, this rangy, long country home is no longer in the right country for them. Designed and built by a Scottish engineer for his own family use and on 15 rural acres with a stream on its boundaries, Coillte forests behind and stables for horses, it ticked all the right boxes, but now they’re relocating home to Scotland they have to leave it all behind.
However, because the couple with three children got what they wanted the first time, they now aim to build a replica of their home back in Scotland, says John Gaffney of GVM Auctioneers.
He guides the unique Ballycoleman home, five miles from Killeagh, near Mount Uniacke, at €850,000, and agrees there’s twice as much house and multiples of acres for this manageable sum as a buyer would get closer to Cork city.
There’s about 4,000 sq ft of built living space, with high insulation values, large rooms, four to five bedrooms, with two big en suite bathrooms - each big enough to accommodate a full-sized bath - and lots of design touches that show an architect/engineer’s hand at work.
It will appeal to anyone who wants space, and is perfect for anyone wanting to keep a few horses, as there’s already a block of eight stables.
Central to the house is a galleried double height dining hall, with staircase and landing and light flooding in through roof and side windows. There’s a similarly-sized family room, with a conservatory, an even larger living room and the kitchen continues the go-large theme, with cherrywood units, slate floor and east-facing bay window.
Other rooms include a spacious study, storeroom, boiler/drying room, and hall. Upstairs, all of the four bedrooms are good double sizes and more, and in addition to the two en suite bathrooms there is one other wash room with pumped shower. And it’s all only a 35-minute drive from the Jack Lynch tunnel.
