Letters to the editor: truckers are the unsung heroes of the pandemic

We all appreciate the work being done by our frontline healthcare workers and by our emergency services during the coronavirus outbreak.

We are also proud of the staff of Aer Lingus, our national airline, who are flying regularly to China to collect vital emergency equipment.

There is, however, another group of gallant workers who deserve our recognition for providing essential services to all of us.

These are the drivers who are a vital link not only in the food-supply chain, but also in the transportation of vital emergency medical supplies.

Without these people, our supermarket shelves would be bare; our pharmacies wouldn’t have our medication; our home heating tanks would be dry; our farmers’ milk wouldn’t get collected; other vital public services would not be available and our economy would grind to a halt.

So, let us all applaud these unsung, modest heroes of the national and International road transport fleet.
