ANYONE passing through Cork at the moment will be enthralled by the sight of thousands of mullet in the River Lee.

Crossing the Christy Ring Bridge the other evening I noticed two salmon - without net marks - looking very lost among hundreds of mullet.

Could there be a better metaphor for our Government’s shameful willingness to sacrifice this magnificent species in the name of political expediency?
