Give us alternative leisure options

THE Irish National Alliance for Action on Alcohol falls hopelessly short in its recommendations to curtail alcohol and drug abuse in Ireland, as highlighted by President McAleese recently.

Give us alternative leisure options

It attributes blame to the Government in its failure to implement further legislation and its lax stance on alcohol advertising rather than the association itself suggesting alternative evening entertainment.

I have never heard anybody address what it is that motivates our insatiable need for drink.

The answer is simple. Aside from the most basic public services, Ireland shuts up by 5pm. Thereafter the private sector has a monopoly on leisure pursuits in pubs, cinemas and nightclubs.

Their are no late-night libraries, no attractive sports venues.

Essentially, the Government provides next to nothing by way of “no money fun”.

In Spain, for instance, libraries open late, various sports events vie for attention and funds are constantly set aside for public celebrations.

Ireland needs to create new nocturnal interests not restrict our enjoyment through more senseless legislation.
