Ending air cargo is a major blow to region
When ‘selling’ Cork abroad one of our strongest marketing points is the existence of an international airport. Many major pharmaceutical, healthcare and high-tech companies are located in the Cork region. These depend on a speedy cargo service.
Has anybody considered the impact the decision to stop such services will have?
How are the companies who use this service to be affected? How will investors looking at the Cork region react? How will the competitiveness of the Cork region be affected?
I agree with management in Aer Lingus wanting to trim fat and become more efficient, but cutting essential services to the regions is a step too far.
The national spatial strategy designates Cork as a gateway city, a centre for national strategic growth with the industry and infrastructure to sustain development and generate investment.
The Government and their representatives in the greater Cork region need to step in and ensure that Aer Lingus, a semi-state company, reflects a Government commitment to the Cork region.
Anything less could have serious implications for the future of the area.
