Our trains get there on time most of the time

YOUR correspondent Sarah Walsh (Irish Examiner letters, Nov 28) made a number of relevant points about the state of our railway system – especially the Dublin/Cork/Dublin service.

Our trains get there on time most of the time

Certainly it could be better - but it could also be an awful lot worse!

I wonder if I hold the record for rail travel between Cork and Dublin?

I recall leaving Cork at about 11 o'clock one fine summer morning and arriving in Dublin at 8.30 the following morning. The year? About 1942/'43. Of course, we had a World War in those days or was it an 'Emergency?'

In modern times, however, I have found little to complain about on this service. Over the last few years my experience has been that the trains arrive within a few minutes of their scheduled times, and the standard of the coaches also has been acceptable. As I am partially disabled, I must praise the rail staff for the assistance I always receive from them.

Your correspondent was certainly unlucky on November 22 last, but I suggest it is not always possible to make general 'one-off ' judgements from a single incident in a year-long schedule. Perhaps I have been lucky.

Dermot S Harte,

Buttevant,

Co Cork.
