Bertie turns gas issue into a political circus

THE Taoiseach has finally explained his Government’s approach to the Corrib gas debacle. You see, it is all a question of turning things on their heads.

As he says, he has had his minister Noel Dempsey “standing on his head all summer” in relation to this issue.

This explains how unique EU-designated special land and marine conservation areas become areas of industrial gas refining and toxic pollutant discharge.

This is why the safety and, for some, the freedom, of Irish citizens has been sacrificed in order to facilitate a cheap onshore development by mega-rich multinationals, and this is why we will end up buying our own natural gas and oil resources from these multinationals at going market rates.

It’s all simply a question of turning logic on its head. So Mr Dempsey performs head-stands all summer with his hands tied in relation to the Rossport Five.

Bertie must think this pose makes him appear independent and impartial. Alas, I can still hear the crack of Shell/Statoil’s whip directing all these incredible circus feats.
