The last straw
He claimed John Bruton was a passionate Christian Democrat.
Not so, Ronán.
John Bruton, as Taoiseach, pushed to bring divorce into this country.
Until the day I die, I will remember his words once the final count figures were in for that referendum.
Flushed with victory, he declared: “A win is a win, and we could not have done it without the help of Fianna Fáil.”
On that day, Irish politics turned sour for me, and has remained so ever since.
