Few countries endorse same-sex marriages

I WISH to reply to the letter from Ian McGahon headlined ‘Same-sex marriage: the civilised world view’ (Irish Examiner, January 7).

Few countries endorse same-sex marriages

He claims not to understand how I came to the conclusion that the "UK is out of touch with the rest of the 'civilised world' by allowing legal recognition for same-sex relationships."

By most accounts there are 193 countries in the world. Of these, only four or five have legalised same-sex marriage.

Mr McGahon incorrectly claims that homosexuality is a 'civil rights' issue.

But, as natural law implies, sexual orientation does not constitute a quality comparable to race, ethnicity or gender when it comes to non-discrimination.

Unlike race, ethnic background, sex and age, homosexual orientation is an objective disorder and evokes moral concern.

In suggesting otherwise, Mr McGahon is merely exploiting tolerance in the service of a particular ideology.

He also incorrectly suggests that I was referring to the Book of Leviticus in supporting the bible's condemnation of homosexuality. He then goes on to attempt to discredit the bible by suggesting that Leviticus permits "slavery and the stoning and burning of people."

The bible both the old and new testaments clearly and unequivocally condemns homosexual acts.

It also condemns all forms of violence.

Finally, Mr McGahon falsely equates my condemnation of homosexual acts with "condemning gay people."

I suppose he also believes every parent who disciplines their child for wrongdoing is at the same time condemning that child?

Homosexuals cannot by themselves create natural families. Therefore, in suggesting that homosexual partnerships are "meaningful relationships," he is merely confusing love with lust.
