Buttiglione not suitable for civil liberties position

RÓNÁN MULLEN outdoes himself (Irish Examiner, October 20) in his article howling about the refusal of the European Parliament to back the appointment of Rocco Buttiglione as European Commissioner for Civil Liberties and Home Affairs.

But these hysterical yelps from Mr Mullen and others on the European religious right about how the poor man’s freedom of expression and religion are being taken away from him, as well as being ear-splittingly shrill, are also jaw-droppingly disingenuous.

Mr Mullen knows what a job application procedure is for. And as a man of the world he has a good idea of what politics in any age require of competent politicians.
