Tongue-tied ‘students’

I HAVE noticed a rash of young people appearing at the door here and silently handing me a small scribbled card saying they are Polish students who need money for college, and would I buy a drawing, please?

Before closing the door, I shall ask the next one how he/she intends to study here if he/she cannot speak English.

I wonder if this is a nationwide, organised practice.
