Mixed reception for local radio stations
The BCI has visited Limerick more than once to close down unofficial stations. On its most recent visit, they closed Radio Limerick One, Galtee, Estuary and Easy FM.
These are stations that are listened to by thousands of ordinary citizens who simply want to hear music of their choice, local banter, or a neighbour playing a tune, reciting a poem or singing a song.
Yet, the BCI closes these stations and replaces them with stations which are doing exactly the same the logic defies me.
Another recent example of this illogical action involves Tipperary Mid West Radio. The BCI reduced this station's licence to community radio status and gave a full licence to a new rival station, Tipp FM.
I have no problem with new stations being set up, but let's have a level playing field.
However, I am glad that Tipperary Mid West was not closed down completely and I thank the BCI for that unlike Kilkenny Radio.
Kilkenny Radio was closed down after some court battles. That these matters have to be resolved through the courts, suggest there is something very wrong in this whole set-up.
The politicians argue that they have no influence, as the BCI is independent. Does this mean the BCI answers to no one?
The ultimate responsibility must surely lie with the Government.
The BCI is set up by the Government, it operates under Government guidelines and funding, and has Government appointees.
If the BCI's performance on behalf of Government is leaving a trail of many thousands of unhappy listeners, from Limerick to Tipperary, Kilkenny to Mullingar, from Sligo/Leitrim to Donegal, then something must be done.
I ask that Fianna Fáil, which I have supported for many years, sort out this situation before the next election.
Your once great party, under de Valera, Lemass and Lynch can again return to an overall majority by just listening to the ordinary citizens of this State and responding to their sincere concerns.
You are not listening any more and it will cost you dearly in the ballot box.
