EU should step in and sort out our inflation

YOUR letters page has been used in recent months to voice Ireland’s growing ire with our ‘rip-off culture’.

EU should step in and sort out our inflation

Rightfully so, the main focus of this annoyance has been the present government, Fianna Fáil and their PD angels of conscience.

However, look beyond these shores and you can equally apportion blame to those with their own parking spaces in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.

It was the European Union that forced Ireland to reduce its inflation as a prerequisite to joining the european common currency. Surely, it is then the responsibility of the European Union to ensure the inflation rate remains low.

It is as if the burly Irishman, ordered to lose weight before being allowed to join the Good Ship Euro, was then allowed to pile on the pounds, once on board, even worse than before.

Our industry is in a state of domination not seen outside of organised crime in Las Vegas, seemingly able to dictate to the Irish government at will.

And while the government’s incompetence is the topic of discussion in every over-priced bar in the country, they turn around and humour us like children.

The might of Europe once frightened the Irish government into action.

It is time for that might to be used again, to deliver to the Europeans in these 26 counties the same costs and standards of living that our continental neighbours enjoy.
