ENVIRONMENT Minister Dick Roche last week claimed much credit for Ireland’s recycling achievements highlighted in the EPA’s national waste report for 2004.

However, examination of the data presented in the report shows that very little credit is due to the minister or his predecessors.

The private waste industry, in co-operation with the industry body Repak, has achieved recycling rates of 50.8% for commercial waste and 56.4% for packaging waste.
