Affront to democracy

THE amount of red tape needed to run our election system is in contravention of democratic principles.

The number of assentors needed to run for the European elections is a massive sixty.

They must line up outside a local authority office and sign a nomination form in the presence of a local official.

If just one of these assentors decides not to attend, the nominating card is invalid. The same is also true for local and national elections, where 15 and 30 assentors are needed, respectively. The system is an affront to democracy and unworkable.
