Croke Park open to rivals and drinkers
First we saw Rule 42 being overturned followed by the news that eleven bars are to be opened at Croke Park.
These two issues - promoting other games and selling alcohol at their own - were never part of what the GAA stood for.
It’s the responsibility of GAA management to protect our national games and maintain their image. The association would be better served by concentrating on raising the standards of its own games.
Gaelic football is in a terrible state, while hurling - the best field game in the world - has only five or six counties competing seriously for the Liam McCarthy Cup each year.
Opening Croke Park is only increasing the profile of other codes. It will do nothing for our games.
Hopefully common sense will prevail on both issues.
