A SHORTAGE of blood donations is not unique to Ireland (Irish Examiner, June 10). In Germany they have the same problem, especially during the holiday period.

They try to battle the problem by having males donate blood every six weeks instead of every 90 days, as is the practice in Ireland. (Women are the same as here: every three months).

Another practice is that everybody who is due for a pre-planned operation is encouraged to donate blood in case it will be needed.
