‘Independent’ body shows its colours

THE decision by An Bord Pleanála to give the go-ahead for Indaver’s toxic waste incinerator on the shores of Cork harbour must spell the end of the Bord as a credible planning body.

‘Independent’ body shows its colours

This disgraceful decision came in the wake of a thorough, month-long oral hearing on the subject In the course of this hearing, Bord Pleanála’s own senior inspector Philip Jones came down against the incinerator in no less than 14 planning counts. But Bord Pleanála ignored its own inspector’s verdict. The reason given for so granting was that the incinerator was in accordance with national (ie Government) policy.

An Bord Pleanála was established for the precise purpose of having a planning authority independent of Government control. Yet this Bord now blatantly shows itself to be no more than a bulldozer for Minister Cullen’s determination to impose this foreign multinational’s toxic incinerator on our people. Fianna Fáil-PD politicians will ultimately face the people in the next general election. People should demand clear answers from each of our opposition parties as to what they will do when they come to power.
