YOUR columnist Rónán Mullen (Irish Examiner, December 22) appears to think that in a Europe without Christianity we would have no reason to treat each other fairly or welcome immigrants, or even to procreate.

What of the role of Christians in two world wars, religious persecution, discrimination against women, deliberate refusal to educate the poor to help them to alleviate their condition through access to family planning and healthcare?

Were not all of these evils - not to mention the Inquisition and paedophilia - perpetrated by Christians?
