Airport protesters have been vindicated
If a major accident happens there, the present Government and its predecessors will bear an enormous responsibility for having put workers’ and passengers’ lives at risk.
The actions of all the Shannon protesters have been vindicated by the emergence of this scandal. It is their actions that have uncovered this sorry story; the anti-war protest forced the Government to rush through legislation at the start of the war to give an appearance of legitimacy to the secret, reckless handing over of Shannon to military planes posing as civilian ones.
Once again it is the story of a frightened and unprincipled government furtively bowing either to the cajoling or to the bullying tactics of the White House.
Now that US presidential elections are in the air again, I see no good reason why Irish people, and people from every other country, should not interfere in those elections by campaigning, demanding votes, expressing preferences and putting forward candidates. After all, the US has effectively put itself in charge of the world, so why shouldn’t the world demand free elections?
