Subject of A Beautiful Mind said no to drugs

HATS off to Tony Humphreys for his excellent piece on Dr John Nash (Feelgood, The Irish Examiner, March 28).

Subject of A Beautiful Mind said no to drugs

Readers with a deeper understanding of so-called ‘mental’ illness, who have seen the film A Beautiful Mind, will, I am sure feel very gratified that Humpreys’ insightful and imaginative perception, so challenging of powerful conventional medical wisdom, is here so cogently represented.

His attack on the psychiatric abuse that Nash suffered would have had added impetus had he read the book.

In the film, the scriptwriter somehow has Russell Crowe saying that he (Nash) owed his recovery to ‘these new psychiatric drugs’. This is totally untrue. In the book Nash had been off all drugs for years up to his recovery.
