According to your recent editorial (Feb 7), your newspaper has a long record of campaigning for the rights and services for people with an “intellectual disability”.

The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) has described as “unhelpful and likely to cause upset” comments by clinical psychologist Tony Humphreys that inferred parents of children with autism were to blame for their child’s condition.

Dr Tony Humphreys said parents were “never to blame” for autism and his intention was simply “to inform and enlighten” the public of research in the area.

I am extremely disappointed with the response of your paper to the calls for a retraction and apology regarding the wildly inaccurate article written by Dr Tony Humphreys (Feelgood).

It was with deep regret that I read the article last Friday in the Irish Examiner written by Tony Humphreys.

I was astounded at the controversy which Tony Humphreys has caused by his article on autism (Feelgood, Feb 3).

As a parent of a child with autism and four other children, I would like to express my dismay at the article by Tony Humphreys (Feelgood, Feb 3), claiming that myself and other such parents, “live predominantly in their heads and possess few or no heart qualities”.

It is at a minimum the responsibility of a newspaper editor to ensure that the content of the paper he edits provides balance and accuracy.

I am the proud (and loving) parent of a child with autism and the chairperson of Galway Autism Partnership.

The publication of an article on autism in last Friday’s Feelgood supplement in this newspaper by Dr Tony Humphreys has caused an outpouring of hurt, anger and concern among readers, a selection of whose comments are published today.

I am writing to you in relation to Tony Humphreys’s article in the Feelgood supplement on Friday last.

The article by Tony Humphreys claiming that autism is caused by “cold” or emotionally distant parents, displays such willful ignorance, lack of understanding and density of inaccurate and offensive statements that it is shocking that the Irish Examiner would publish it.

Never before have I been accused of emotionally abusing my children in a national newspaper.

Credit due to Tony Humphreys for illuminating the fallacies and foibles of the diagnostic presumptions which engulf autistic spectrum discourse.
