Visitors can’t get a clear view of the Dáil

IN 2000 half of the lawn at the rear of Leinster House, overlooking Merrion Square, became a car park and so the only unimpeded view of our national parliament was spoiled.

Visitors can’t get a clear view of the Dáil

For years it has been almost impossible for coach tourists to see or photograph the building from the front entrance on Kildare Street due to security huts, but there remained at least the possibility of a clear view of the garden facade of Cassell's classical house. Alas, that too is gone. Tourist guides are aware at first hand of the reaction of visitors to what should be the highlight of a tour of any capital city the view of its parliament and surrounds. They are not impressed with the car littered area now obstructing what used to be the most attractive view of the building. We ask the relevant authority to return the area to a formal garden in appropriate style.

How can the Government encourage citizens to think of their health and the environment and use public transport to get to work while at the same time providing parking for themselves right at the door?
