We must tackle teenage suicide

WE NEED to ask ourselves what can be done when Irish children under the age of 14 are attempting suicide in increasing numbers (Irish Examiner, Nov 9). As responsible adults we cannot allow children to feel so hopeless and worthless that they can see no way out other than to end their lives.

As an educator of many years experience, I believe that all schools should make time for lessons in emotional literacy, giving young people the opportunity to understand and learn to manage their emotions, as well as relating effectively to others.

It takes very little time out of a normal school week and little in the way of resources, but the benefits are clear.
