Our roads as good as the best

I DISAGREE with Cal Hyland (Irish Examiner letters, Nov 11) when he says that Irish roads are among the worst in the developed world.

Our roads as good as the best

I wonder where he got these statistics. He must have had his eyes closed while driving abroad if he is suggesting that roads are any better than ours in other countries.

I have driven in France, Belgium, Germany Holland, Britain and the US, and I can categorically state that Irish roads are as good, or better in some cases, than the major roads anywhere in the world.

They are a credit to our engineers.

On a recent trip to Boston I had occasion to drive to Quebec a distance of 1,400 miles mostly on motorway and the road surfaces were nowhere near as good as our motorways.

Of course, there is no doubt that some of our secondary roads need repair, but this problem exists in every country.
