EU will not be new Soviet Union

BRIAN FLANAGAN (Irish Examiner letters, July 15) incorrectly claims that Articles I-5 and I-6 of the draft treaty establishing a constitution for Europe will turn the EU into the new Soviet Union.

Article I-5, on the primacy of EU law, has been an unwritten principle of the EU since the 1960s and is recognised and accepted by all member states.

If EU law wasn’t superior, then the EU couldn’t function, as every member state could simply ignore EU laws it didn’t like.
