Welcome to the speed-trap festival

ON a Saturday morning recently I was forced to brake sharply and pull out

‘Speeding’ cars were being stopped and queued on the side of the slow lane (there is little or no hard shoulder at this point) and the details taken through the driver’s window with the interviewing gardaí having to stand in the slow lane.

The gardaí were doing a roaring trade because no one knows why there is an under-40 speed restriction here on one of the widest and best non-residential roads in Cork.

With all the talk of road safety, surely this is a most dangerous practice (if not illegal) for motorists and particularly for the gardaí involved?
