THIS year, we should take steps to ensure the preservation of rural community life. Local authorities have shown strong resistance to those in rural areas who apply for planning permission for houses, even on family holdings.

Planning policy works against rural residents

The official policy is that most new single houses should be located in or near towns where, among other things, the occupants can avail of the sewerage system already in place.

To anyone born and reared in a rural area, this was a most ridiculous ruling, and it has caused great anger and disenchantment with local authorities.
