Vacant houses will soon be occupied

John A Cullinane (Irish Examiner, April 29), concerning vacant houses at the East Gate entrance to Powdermills (Mill Range) and Time Square (Chapel Gate), I would like to point out that the housing is “affordable housing“.

Affordable housing is housing made available by the housing authority at a price which is less than the market value. This type of housing is generally (but not exclusively) aimed at first-time buyers who are unable to afford to purchase a house in the open market.

Because our asking price can be considerably less than market value, it is imperative the selection process is fair and comprehensive and that the most deserving cases are selected 380 applications were received for affordable housing in Ballincollig and, consequently, shortlisting had to be done.
