Bishops were right about Browne scheme
He is wrong; it is a demonic shadow that is over us, threatening to destroy us. I thought that everyone had a right to make representations to the Government on matters important to them it seems Mr Dwyer would like to deny the bishops this right.
The bishops at the time were right to oppose Noel Browne's health scheme.
This could have led to an Irish welfare state rather like China or European communist countries where the government dictated size of families, contraceptives and abortion, totally contrary to Christian teaching.
"Children in religious institutions did not receive a proper education," says your columnist. What a ridiculous statement! Everyone knows the great contribution of Christian Brothers and nuns to education in Ireland.
Yes, discipline may have been harsh, but that's how things were done in those days. There is now scarcely any discipline and the results don't seem to be too good. Apparently there was some abuse, but the vast majority of Brothers were truly Christian.
Ryle Dwyer describes one of our parish priests as an idiot. I have yet to meet an idiotic parish priest. He has some neck to insult our clergy. I suppose he knows that he will get away with it.
