We must help high dependency patients

THERE is an urgent need for 'stand alone' units for those unfortunate to succumb to the grim reality of Alzheimer’s disease and stroke dementias.

Most nursing homes do not want this type of patient because of the intensive nursing care involved and special design considerations.

The issue of high-dependency care, either in the public or private sector, demands immediate attention. Many of our general hospitals are now bed-locked with patients afflicted by end-stage Alzheimer’s and stroke dementia.
