Factory closure mired in untruths

THE closure of the beet factory was nothing short of devastating to the town and hinterland of Mallow.
Factory closure mired in untruths

However, this should have come as no surprise given the trend seen in the sugar industry across Ireland, as we have seen in the recent closures of the plants at Thurles, Carlow and Tuam.

This, however, flies in the face of the statement made by the Minister of State for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Batt O’Keeffe. He promised the people of Mallow the sugar factory was safe and that there were no plans for its closure.

In an article in the County (Irish Examiner, January 24), Mr O’Keeffe ‘received assurance from [Greencore chief executive David Dilger] that there are no proposals to close Mallow Sugar Factory’.

Circumstances have proved that either Mr O’Keeffe was playing politics, or was misinformed by Dilger to save his own neck. In any case, a half truth is a whole lie.
