Website reveals our road route treasure

YOUR edition of May 18 carried a letter from university teachers and researchers seeking the release of information on the archaeological discoveries at Woodstown as part of preparatory work for the Waterford city bypass.

Website reveals our road route treasure

The National Roads Authority is currently funding and overseeing a major programme of archaeological investigation and excavation in connection with road schemes throughout the country.

We are anxious to ensure wider availability of information on what are often exciting finds than can be achieved by the post-excavation reports which archaeologists are required to produce and submit to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

As a step in this direction the NRA website (www.nra.ie/archaeology) currently includes information on archaeological discoveries on 14 national road schemes.

The information is updated on a regular basis. Details relating to the Woodstown site should be available by early next week.
