Information highway ends in schoolyard

I RECEIVED a phone call from a parent telling me there was a report in the Irish Examiner (September 20) about the Department of Education's summer work scheme for 2005.

Information highway ends in schoolyard

It said that schools in need of accommodation or small-scale building works would need to speed up their funding applications to meet a new deadline.

Our school is one of those in need of temporary accommodation next year. Our grounds look more like a parking place for containers at a port than what one would expect of a school in 2004.

I would have expected that such a scheme would have been brought to the attention of schools in a less haphazard way through a general circular.

However, I must take some of the blame because, according to your report, details are available at www.education.ie

I was unable to find a reference to it on the department's homepage but I later found it, after much searching, when I clicked on 'Press Room.'

If I'd abandoned my class and the usual administrative duties pertaining to my job as teaching principal, no doubt I would have found it sooner.

According to your report, the Minister for Education, Mr Dempsey, said the internet would replace letters as the primary medium for distributing information regarding schemes and programmes.

A very progressive idea, minister.

When will the department be replacing 'freight containers' as the primary accommodation for the children?
