Swim pool in state unworthy of man it honours

THE LATE Gus Healy, a Lord Mayor of Cork and a Fianna Fáil TD, made many contributions to the development of the city and the welfare of its people.

Swim pool in state unworthy of man it honours

The public swimming pool on the southside of the city was named in his honour.

This serves 19 schools and five swimming clubs, as well as the general public. When will the facility be upgraded to meet current health and safety standards?

While the condition of the pool is the primary issue, the roof, changing rooms and showers also must be upgraded. The state of the facility calls into question our respect for those such as Mr Healy who strive to improve our community life.

The Government says it is costing the Exchequer €500 million a year to deal with the obesity problem. Allowing the Gus Healy pool to decline is not a positive response to this issue. Who will ensure it remains a valuable asset to the community and a worthy memorial to the man it’s named after?
