VAT policy best left to EU member states

I WELCOME the strong stand taken by the government against the proposal published by the European Commission on the operation of future VAT rates within the EU.

VAT policy best left to EU member states

The commission has recommended that the zero percentage VAT rate which applies to children’s shoes and clothes in Ireland and Britain should be eliminated. The bottom line here is that the EU does not have power to implement tax changes within member states unless there is unanimous agreement among all of them for such changes.

In simple terms, issues of taxation are the sole preserve and power of individual member states, and that is the way it must remain.
