Diversionary tactics in the war on terror

THE lunatics have clearly taken over the asylum as evidenced by the diversion of the Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens flight in the US (Irish Examiner, September 23).

To inconvenience hundreds of other passengers because of who he might have met or known is an Orwellian bad moment for us all.

The McCarthy era is the only thing close to the Ashcroft era. When are the thought police going to be commissioned?

One size does not fit all. Most terrorists may be Muslims, but most Muslims are not terrorists. The shortsightedness of this is best illustrated by the fact that the United flight had to be diverted en route.

If Yusuf Islam was such a threat to ‘national security,’ why was he allowed to board? This is the equivalent of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted and gives the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) its proper acronym of ‘Thousands Standing Around.’

If you can’t stop them on the ground, what is the point of doing so in the air?
