Nice one, Garret... you were the star of the show
For the duration of the campaign he bestrode the Irish political landscape like a colossus.
We all know that ever since Sean Lemass mooted the European project in 1961, Garret has been an enthusiastic supporter.
However, the recent campaign represents his finest hour. He performed brilliantly in both the broadcast and print media, but above all in ‘meet the people’ walk-abouts.
I watched him on a busy street in Drogheda handing out Yes leaflets and passionately outlining his case to all and sundry.
I believe his impact on the final outcome was decisive. It is good to see that, sometimes, integrity, decency and goodness can bear fruit.
